Did you know that 20% of the world's population suffers from psychological disorders? Going by the current world population, listed by the U.N as 7 billion, that's 1.2 billion people that struggles with mental disorders. In Kenya, 1 in every 4 people is likely to suffer from mental illness in their lifetime (yet the country has only 88 psychiatrists and 427 nurses qualified to handle the illnesses in the 14 mental health hospitals, which have a bed capacity of between 15 and 25). Despite these staggering statistics, many people still do not know what mental health means or what psychological disorders are and there is a general stigmatization of people suffering from psychological disorders. It is time that we had this conversation.
