I have been talking about mental health for a long time now, be it here on Randomly Creative or on various social media platforms, in a bid to raise awareness on the issue. This has been met with both curiosity and disdain, as well as understanding. Talks about mental health awareness have especially been magnified after last month which was Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. In Kenya alone, in recent weeks we have seen the media produce a documentary on mental illness in Kenya and the stigma that people with mental health issues face. This is especially important because the rate of suicide in Kenya has reportedly hit a ten-year high, rising by 58% between 2008 and 2017, with depression accounting for majority of the cases. The conversation is yet to span to other illnesses such as anxiety disorders and personality disorders and all the other mental illnesses, but at least it’s a start. This is why, this year, I am taking part in the Shattering Stigmas event.
Shattering Stigmas is an online event held annually and it centers discussions on mental health. This year’s Shattering Stigmas event started on October 6th and will continue all the way to October 20th. Throughout the event, the hosts will post several articles relating to mental health on their various websites and you, dear reader, will get to read them and interact with other people whilst talking about mental health. The hosts for this year are: Madalyn at Novel Ink, Ben at Ace of Bens, Taylor at Stay on the Page, Marie at Drizzle and Hurricane Books, and Kitty at Jelly Fable. Visit Novel Ink, Ace of Bens, Stay on the Page, Drizzle and Hurricane Books, and Jelly Fable to read the Shattering Stigmas articles and to interact with other people in the quest to break the stigma surrounding mental health. I am honoured to have written two articles that will be featured at Ace of Bens and Novel Ink. I hope to see you there!
